preventing from timer to be closed by Andriod

hi,
I'm running a simple timer in my app, but when the time is too long and the phone goes to sleep (or the user changes apps) the timer (or actually my app) gets killed by Android. how can I prevent it from happening?
(i'm using Mobilist.AdvancedTimer.Forms.Plugin)
