Displaying Placeholder text on a DatePicker - Can't get this to work

I followed the renderer here:

However, the text is never displayed and the datepicker always shows todays date when initialized

I just want it to say "Date of Birth" until the person clicks on it the first time.

Is this possible? any ideas?
