non trivial examples?

Hi

i'm in the process of evaluating Xamarin as a possible solution to multi platform development for a product we're currently building.
We have an existing Windows 8.1 universal application, which is comprised of a dozen or so pages, basically using a grid like layout.

Our application is not that complicated from a UI perspective - so i think forms may be a good solution.
basically we have a
- gridview as a type of hub page for all features within the application
- tabbed pages for each feature
- a top bar that shows some state of the app

we do have the requirements to do some native code, but that can be wrapped into the dependency service.

However what i'm really struggling with is maybe the immaturity of the platform?
- samples are trivial and out of date
- any articles you find seem to point to earlier versions of the software, the official documentation seems inadequate.
- studio integration is pretty meh as it defautls to older version of the framework 8.0 & silverlight (who cares about silverlight nowadays?)
apps instead of integration on universal for windows 8.1 / 10. Not to mention the weirdness of how it's creating projects (names / folders / eh)
- xamarin studio just feels like it has a really long way to go before it's really on par with visual studio itself.

All that being said - maybe it's just me not having the right resources.

So to the question part
- is there a better source of samples / techniques out there?
esp around navigation, data binding, data access (to disk on device) etc
- anyone else have experience with implementing windows unversal application on forms?
