MasterDetailPage (Android) adds back arrow to first page of a navigation stack

I can't help but get the feeling that I'm missing something here.

I have a MasterDetailPage whose Master is a NavigationPage. On iOS this displays as expected - the first page has no "Back" button or back arrow, because, well it's the first page and you can't go back to anywhere. (Screenshot 1 in attached PDF file)

When I push a page onto the navigation stack, the new page gets a "Back" button and a back arrow, as expected. (Screenshot 2)

On Android, things are different, and here's where I'm not sure whether I've simply misunderstood or whether there's a bug in Xamarin Forms.

So on Android, the same setup creates a MasterDetailPage whose Master is a NavigationPage, but the first page in the navigation stack now has a back arrow. (Screenshot 3)

Is this normal for Android apps and my expectations (being originally an iOS person) are misaligned?

The funny thing is that the if I take the NavigationPage out of the MasterDetailPage and display it on its own, even on Android there's no back arrow for the first page of the navigation stack. (Screenshot 4).

Should I file a bug?

If not, what's the recommended way to get rid of the back arrow on the first page?

Thanks in advance!
