What .NET version is used in a Xamarin Forms Shared Solution

This may be a silly questions, but I'm somewhat confused here.. When working on a PCL project you can select the .NET target version, right. When you create a XF Shared project there does not seem to be a way to do that. So, what is the .NET target version in this case? And is there a way to change it or update it?
